Beat Me Because You Love Me! I Don’t Understand…..

violence1Growing up, I remember my parents when they would chastise me say; “I’m spanking you because I love you”  I could relate to that type of love, but what I don’t understand is how a man or woman can beat on their significant other and say those words.  You beat me because you love me!  I don’t understand.  I’ve always felt that love was kind, nurturing and gentle.  No one told me that I would have to suffer in my relationship with being beaten on a constant basis, but for many individuals, this is the case

Sarah: “My husband comes home everyday and if his dinner is not on the table, ready for him to eat, I will be punished.  He told me that he is teaching me and that if I could open my mind, I would realize that he is doing this because he wants me to be the best wife a man could ever ask for”

Michael: “I want to explain that my wife lashes out at me when I don’t do what I promised I would do.  I know I’m forgetful at times, but I really don’t appreciate the punches in my face while I’m sleeping.  She told me that she wants me to learn from every experience and understand that I am the one at fault, not her”

Janice: “My Dad and Mom use to fight all the time and when I got married, I felt that it was normal for my husband to hit me from time to time.  I just wish he would not use objects because those things leave marks.  But, I know that he loves me, he told me he does”

These are just some examples of what we hear from those living in abusive relationships.  You might wonder, why do they put up with such abuse, but understand this; many feel that it is all about love.

Love is a strong emotion and must be understood that it doesn’t harm or cause pain to its receiver, but instead, heals, nurtures and comforts

Today, if you are a survivor (not victim) of abuse, please seek help.  This is not a normal behavior and no one should live in a world of abuse
